Sarah Parsons
I am currently a Master of Science student at the University of Guelph studying Dairy welfare and behaviour. I have gained experience in this field from past employment and volunteer opportunities, and hope to continue to do research and provide service in this field. From past job positions, I gained research experience and discovered my passion for discovering and improve calf welfare and performance. My work ethic is strong and I can manage multiple tasks at a time. I enjoy being challenged and learn new things well and quickly.
Education
I believe having a role in research is not one to take lightly. There are always improvements to be made and things to discover. I have a positivism research philosophy, meaning I try to uncover the truth about how things are. I believe it is important to have a sound scientific approach when developing knowledge in an area. With the role of conducting research with live animals, I believe it is my responsibility to ensure data collection is unbiased and done well in order to gain knowledge from trials and improve the performance and welfare of the animals I work with.
I hope to continue my education and expand my teaching skills and opportunities. From past experiences tutoring students, I have realized the importance of understanding how each individual learns. I believe it is important to make one on one connections with my students to help them succeed. When teaching, I like to ask, listen and understand the perspectives and needs of my students. Discovering what motivates my students to help them learn and retain information is how I like to educate. I value having patience and communicating with my students so we both can get a meaningful experience out of our interactions.
My service philosophy is to engage in activities and meetings where I can apply my knowledge and skills to help transfer information to the public. I believe it is important to build relationships between people in your field of study as well as outside. Service should be utilized as ways to collaborate, learn, transfer knowledge and ideas. It is my philosophy that service interactions should be meaningful to both parties and innovation should be facilitated through these interactions.
